The wind and solar systems needed to generate the necessary power for “hands off” refrigeration can significantly detract from the beauty of the boat. Brian Herr (SC39 Imagine) details the design and installation of Imagine’s integrated solar, Bimini and refrigeration system that runs unattended, indefinitely and off the grid.
  • §  12:15-13:15 Lunch
  • §  13:15-14:30 Presentation Community Boating Center, New Bedford, MA
  • o   We will be learning about the Community Boating Center. It is a shining localexample of the many programs around the country that are fostering a next generation of boat and boating  enthusiasts. It’s mission is to teach positive life values to youth through boating. It was launched twenty years ago after an area social worker was inspired to create a program encouraging city children, who may otherwise not have the opportunity, to enjoy one of New Bedford’s greatest resources. It’s Summer Youth Sailing Program remains at the core of an ever expanding list of programs. In 2017, thousands of area youth participated in sailing, kayaking, rowing, boat building, underwater remote operated vehicle design and construction, windmill blade design and construction, water quality monitoring, maritime debris clean-up and the ocean stewardship STEM program.
  • §  14:30-16:00 Member Presentation “Why Bother? NMEA Protocols Revealed.” Stuart Cody (SC31Gwynpennon)
  • §  Networking instruments aboard ship has been with us for decades. NMEA 0183, SeaTalk, NMEA 2000, describe several hardware and software protocols in current use. WiFi and USB, RS-232, RS-422 can be utilized to tie in computers, tablets and smartphones. Do you want to add instruments? What’s usable on the eBay market, second-hand? Does your existing gear still lack a tie-in with your new VHF or AIS? Here is a conversation on what we need to know to tune up our shipboard technology and make intelligent decisions.
